A head lice infestation can become widespread in a matter of mere weeks and often wreaks havoc on entire schools and households. Young females tend to get head lice more often than males either because of closer contact with peers or their longer hair, or perhaps a mixture of both circumstances. In any case, armed with accurate information you will be able to keep these pests from taking over your household.
A few cloves of garlic and along with a few other ordinary ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen can be a natural and safe alternative to getting rid of a lice infestation once and for all. Garlic is also inexpensive, easy to find, and will not harm the environment, not to mention your precious health.
Garlic and Lemon Juice
Curb a head lice infestation with garlic and lemon juice by making a paste of these two simple ingredients. Take three or four garlic cloves, depending on how long the hair is, and grind into a bowl along with a few drops of lemon juice. Apply the paste to the hair, massaging completely into the scalp. Add a few more drops of lemon juice to the scalp if it begins to dry out and cover the head with a plastic shower cap.
The best time for this treatment is just before bed so it has several hours to work on the lice. In the morning, shampoo the hair thoroughly to remove the garlic and lemon juice. It may take several shampoos before it's totally removed so be sure to allow some extra time for this important step of the process.
The hair will also have to be combed through very carefully using a special lice comb with many tiny teeth closely spaced together for trapping the nits in order to prevent a head lice infestation from reoccurring.
Garlic Oil, Tea Tree Oil and Goldenseal
The marriage of garlic oil and tea tree oil works beautifully when coping with a head lice infestation.
Use 12 drops of garlic oil for medium to short length hair along with 12 drops of tea tree oil mixed into one pint of warm water. Apply the mixture to the hair and allow to set for a half hour before applying again twice more. After the third application, add dried goldenseal to two cups of boiling water and steep until cool enough to use on the head.
The hair must now be combed through with a nit comb to remove any eggs that still remain.
Your doctor can also help with recommendations for dealing with a head lice infestation in your household if you are having difficulty getting control of the situation. Never use harmful ingredients such as flea and tick products that are designed for cats and dogs, or lawn care chemicals, or kerosene, all of which are extremely harmful to humans and their environment.
Instead of these unorthodox and unproven methods for combating a head lice infestation, use all natural ingredients such as garlic, olive oil, tea tree oil, lemon juice, and coconut oil as opposed to anything that may do harm to your skin or hair.
