Natural Remedies for Nail Fungus

Having nail fungus can be embarrassing. Although it may seem like a mild infection during its early stages, it can still cause minor discomfort, with visible symptoms being the discoloration of toe nails. If you have fungal infection in your nails, it is advisable to have it checked by a doctor and treated immediately. For mild cases, you can try natural methods to cure fungal infections on the nails. Here are some home remedies.

Soak Infected Nails in Vinegar

A lot of people have proven this method effective in treating mild nail fungal infection. It is recommended to soak the infected nails on vinegar for at least twenty (20) minutes per day for two (2) weeks prior to seeing any real nail clearing. The only problem with this natural cure is it won't treat heavy nail fungal infections as vinegar has not enough power to reach the root of infection.

Listerine Mouthwash Foot Baths

Listerine is a powerful antiseptic mouthwash. It is also being used by some people in curing nail fungus since it is cheaper than prescription drugs. Eucalyptol, Salicylate and Thymol are some of the main ingredients of Listerine that are believed to cure fungal infections in the nails. The treatment method using this agent is to soak the affected nail in undiluted Listerine for around 30 minutes a day for one to two weeks.

Bleach Toenail Fungus Treatment

Luckily, you can use bleach in treating toenail fungus. You can do this by diluting the bleach in water and applying it to the infected nails. Make sure to cut your nails first before you apply the bleach solution so you can expose the fungus more to the bleach. Suggested method for this is adding part bleach to around 100 parts of water in a bucket. Soak your feet for 30 minutes at least once a week. For severe cases, it is advisable to soak the infected nails to the bleach solution for 15 to 20 minutes a day for 2 to 3 months.

Application of Essential Oils

Applying oregano oil, tea tree oil and other essential oils on the affected area can help significantly in the early stages of nail fungal infection. Simply apply the essential oil and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes daily until you see improvements in your nails. This home remedy, however, is no substitute for medical cures as the outcome differ greatly.

While the effectiveness of the suggested natural nail fungus remedies varies from person to person, all of these generally do not have side effects. For fast cure, it would be a good idea to employ a combination of nail fungal infection home remedies and medical treatments.
